Tricks to Keep Your Workstation Organized – Continued

January 16, 2016 By Quilter's Thread

1. Wall Of Shelves Or Dressers

Having a wall of shelves in your work area room is a great way to store your fabrics and tools and have them in clear view. Or you can use a dresser to store items if you prefer not having them in clear view. Dressers are a great option if you quilt in an area of your home that is also used for gatherings such as the living or dining room.

2. File Your Fabrics

Another great way to organize fabrics is to file them away in your desk drawer. This is how you can also organize your fabrics and have them near where you are working without having to get up to reach them. You can also organize them by color to make it even easier to find specific fabrics while working.

3. Multi-Use Storage Trays for Little Things

Trays are a great way to organize small quilting items such as pins and clips. You can store them in your desk drawer or on a shelf whichever is easiest for you to access when quilting.

4. Easy Access Tool Board

This is a great way to have your sharp cutting tools safely stored while also in clear view and easy to grab. The metal magnetic board allows for the metal tools to cling to the board without falling ensuring that you won’t lose them. Make sure that if you use this board that it is stored in a safe place away from children.

5. Command Hooks

Use command hooks to organize all of your rotary quilt rulers and hang them up in view while having it close to your work area. By having things in view instead of stored away will help you find them easier and be able to quickly get your projects completed.

Having an organized room will help you complete your projects faster than before while also having a place for every tool and material item. Here are some organizing tricks and hacks you should incorporate into your quilting workstation area.

3. An Organized Cutting Table

Having a table that is well constructed will help you stay focused and finish projects quickly saving you time. By laying everything out and having a place for every tool will help you keep track of where everything is without having to stop and look for it.
There are different ways you can organize your cutting table such as having built-in drawers to store items in it or even putting hook pockets on the side of the table to store items for an easy way to grab them.

4. Thread Shelf Organizer

This is a great way to organize your thread and keep them from getting tangled up. You can even make your own custom made shelf like in the image below or buy one from the store. To stay even more tidy organize your thread by color coordination so that it is easy to compare thread shades from one another when deciding what thread will match your fabrics.

Make the Perfect Travel Size Bag

December 22, 2015 By Quilter's Thread

A travel size bag or storage case is perfect to keep your quilting tools organized when quilting on the go. Instead of going to the store to buy a travel or storage bag why not put your sewing skills to use by making one for yourself instead. What’s great about making travel and or storage bags yourself is that you can design them how you like with the designs you prefer.

Multiple bags

Large Bags shown are 14″ square, the small bag uses a 7″ zipper.

Things you’ll need to make the travel bag:

  • Main fabric (Back of bag, zipper base and lower border): 1/2 yard.
  • Lining Fabric (inside of back) 16″ x 16″ square
  • Batting 16″ x 16″ square
  • Clear Vinyl: 8 1/2″
  • 14″ Zipper

Things to keep in mind when making the perfect travel size bag:

  • Always plan ahead and decide what your main purpose is for using the bag. Are you going to store heavier objects in it? If so make sure you choose durable and strong fabric that can handle the weight so that it doesn’t tear.
  • Make sure you pick a good choice of thread that is strong and will match your fabric so that the thread color doesn’t stand out from the pattern. A good reliable type of thread to use is always 100% cotton thread but depending on the fabric that you choose always do a little research before you make your purchase.
  • If you choose to use clear vinyl for the travel bags make sure not to press the vinyl or any fabric near it because the vinyl will melt ruining your bag.
  • If you are planning on making multiple travel or storage bags it is best to make them all at the same time in an assembly fashion than individually from start to finish.
