When I was in New Zealand, I was incredibly lucky to see two glaciers that terminate in a rain forest. Walking up to view these waning phenomena, and catching glimpses of the sun and the glaciers’ ice spires through the rain forest vegetation was incredibly moving. Int his video, I discuss the design of a quilt that captures the colors and feel of the experience. In my next video, I’ll talk about the quilting.

Artistic talent can (and should) be learned
I grew up with highly artistic family members. My sisters were drawing realistic dogs and cats- I mean REALISTIC, dogs and cats- before kindergarten. Around the age of ten, I mastered cute rows of flowers. It worked for me, it was the early 70’s, Flower Power was in.
In high school, I managed an “A for effort” in art by making a train engine out of slabs of clay. It was engineered beautifully. It looked like it was painted by a second-grader.
Good thing I got perfect scores on every math test, my mother wouldn’t have had a thing to put in the scrapbook with my sisters’ works of art….

Here Comes the Sun: Festival of the Sun Quilt
The charge was to make a quilt inspired by a summer festival, and I had a week to do it. The only festival I attended this summer was Inti Raymi (Inti- Sun, Raymi- Festival) which was celebrated when I was in Cusco, Peru with my granddaughter.
The Inti Raymi dates back to Inca times when the Sun was worshiped and offered sacrifices. The festival coincides with the winter solstice, when the Incas, and Peruvians today, gather at the Temple of the Sun at sunrise to welcome and celebrate the “return of the sun” and longer, warmer days.
In earlier times, the celebration lasted many days. When the Spanish conquered the Incas, the celebration date was changed from the actual solstice to June 24th to continue the celebration in hiding by coinciding the date with the Catholic feast of John the Baptist.
