Historical Quilt Patterns: What’s Old is New

May 3, 2018 By Lisa Berentsen

“What goes around comes around” is the basic understanding of how karma, the spiritual law of cause and effect, works. The word “karma” literally means activity. My favorite activity is quilting, so when something in quilting comes around again, it’s all good, especially when looking at historical quilt patterns.

Quilters are constantly creating new twists on traditional techniques and designs. Simply changing the scale or applying new fabrics to a block can result in remarkable new quilts.

QT Traditional Quilt Blocks

In the spirit of “what goes around, comes around,” Quilter’s Thread is revisiting some historical quilt blocks and giving you instructions and some ideas to launch you on a creative journey to bring the past into your future.

The first block we are revisiting is commonly known as”Whirlpool,” or “Windblown Star.” We know this block has been coming around at least since the 1700’s, as it was found in a quilt in Maine in 1778. It is made from half square triangles and has endless possibilities.

The instructions are available in the QT store.

Have a look; have your hand at it, and let us know how the Whirlpool block came around for you.

Live well. Quilt well.
